High-performance concrete differs significantly from other types of concrete in terms of raw material selection, primarily in the following aspects:
(1) Cementitious materials: UHPC has a very low water-to-binder ratio, typically between 0.14 and 0.27, with a high cement content of around 700-1010 kg/m³. It utilizes fine particle-sized materials. Traditional water reducers like naphthalene-based ones are increasingly unable to meet engineering needs due to their technical limitations, whereas polycarboxylate water reducers, as a highly regarded new generation of high-performance water reducers, make achieving such low water-to-binder ratios possible.
(2) Aggregates: UHPC does not use coarse aggregates and instead selects fine aggregates such as quartz sand, which have mechanical properties similar to the paste. This eliminates the skeletal constraint effect of coarse aggregates, significantly reducing pores and microcracks at the interface between the paste and aggregates caused by shrinkage.
(3) Admixtures: The achievement of low water-to-binder ratios and porosity in UHPC relies heavily on advancements in concrete admixture technology. Traditional water reducers like naphthalene-based ones are increasingly inadequate for engineering requirements due to their limitations, while polycarboxylate water reducers, as a new generation of high-performance water reducers, enable the realization of these low ratios.
In addition to the above aspects, fibers such as steel fibers or composite fibers must be incorporated during the preparation of UHPC, primarily to enhance strength, toughness, and crack resistance. Applications of UHPC* High-Performance Concrete:
1. Leveraging UHPC's high strength, structural component sizes can be reduced, providing more usable space. UHPC enables the construction of bridges with longer spans and greater clearances. It also allows for smaller cross-sectional dimensions of ground-floor columns in high-rise buildings, increasing usable area.
2. Utilizing UHPC's high tensile strength and corrosion resistance, it can be used to manufacture oil and gas pipelines, replacing expensive large-diameter thick-walled steel pipes, significantly enhancing pipeline durability and reducing costs.
3. Taking advantage of UHPC's high impermeability, it can be used to fabricate integrated containers for storing low- to medium-level nuclear waste.
4. Applied in security fields to produce anti-explosion and impact-resistant devices.
5. Used for on-site repairs and structural reinforcement. UHPC* High-Performance Concrete is a new material developed in recent years, notable not only for its high strength and durability but also for its low shrinkage and no need for steam curing. Utilizing this material and the UHPC composite deck technology developed based on it, it has been successfully applied in highway bridges, urban bridges, and various repair and reinforcement projects, effectively addressing the global challenge of fatigue cracking in orthotropic steel bridge decks. The Dongting Lake Bridge on the Meng-Hua Railway employs this UHPC composite deck, which not only reduces fatigue stress in the steel structure and prevents cracking but also serves as a waterproofing and wear-resistant layer, providing comprehensive protection for the steel deck and enhancing the overall health and safety of the bridge structure.
